Mosquito Control
Following wet season rainfall, the prevalence of mosquitoes in the local environment significantly increases. Not only do mosquitoes create a nuisance to the community by way of itching bites, they are also capable of spreading illness such as Ross River Virus, Barmah Forest Virus and the rare but potentially fatal Murray Valley Encephalitis.
Residents and visitors to Broome are advised the most effective way of preventing illness is to protect yourself and your family from being bitten by mosquitoes. This involves applying repellents, wearing long loose clothing and avoid being outdoors at dawn and dusk.
Residents are asked to prevent mosquito breeding at their home and work place by:
- Emptying containers holding water such as pot plant drip trays, tyres, tarpaulins, boats, wading pools, bird baths and other containers.
- Ensure septic tanks are sealed and vent pipes are fitted with a mosquito proof cowl.
- Ensure rainwater tanks are fitted with insect proof mesh.
