State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers in Broome help the local community respond to a wide range of emergencies including cyclones, floods, storms, road crash, earthquakes and tsunami. They also carry out search and rescue operations.
In an emergency SES volunteers assist the community by:
- Making temporary repairs to homes damaged in cyclones and storms
- Clearing fallen trees from homes and cars
- Rescuing trapped or injured people
- Sandbagging areas in danger of flooding
- Assisting people relocate
- Resupplying local and remote communities during floods
- Providing support during bush fires
This group of dedicated people are not paid and give up their time, often braving wet, windy and dangerous conditions to come to the aid of hundreds in need of emergency assistance.
During an emergency there may be many calls for emergency assistance so calls are prioritised. SES volunteers will attend as soon as possible and your patience is greatly appreciated.
Become an SES volunteer
The unit is always keen to welcome new members. Anybody between the ages of 16 and 60 plus, who is willing to give up their spare time to train and respond to emergencies can become an SES volunteer.
As a volunteer you will receive world class accredited training in a whole range of areas including search and rescue, navigation, communications, first aid, road accident rescues, air observation, four wheel drive operations, vertical rescue and team leadership.
